The Young Australia League (YAL) can finally announce the 10 incredible young people who have been awarded scholarships for the 2018 academic school year. This is the third year that the YAL, one of Australia’s oldest youth organisations, has offered scholarship opportunities to young Australians experiencing hardship due to social circumstances, disability or distance.
YAL Chairman Frank Schaper said the 10 recipients, all from Western Australia, impressed the selection committee with the quality of their applications and genuine desire to succeed academically despite the financial and situational barriers facing them.
“We view these scholarships as a ‘hand up’ not a ‘hand out’ that allow young people experiencing disadvantage continued access to education that they might otherwise not have. We believe that the opportunity to realise their full academic or skills potential has a lasting positive impact on their lives, “said Mr Schaper.
Kawlija-Merle Brahim is one of three indigenous Swan View Senior High school students to receive a scholarship. She said, “I was overcome when I found out I had received a YAL Scholarship for 2018. It means so much to me. Knowing I have the funds to purchase a laptop, pay my school fees and to be able to attend all camps and excursions until I graduate is such a relief for me and my family. I feel blessed to have this support and opportunity and am looking forward to being an ambassador for the program. Get ready to see me follow my dreams.”

Post-secondary Scholarship
Par Chin Sung, 19, graduated in 2017 from Morley Senior High School, of Morley and has been accepted into TAFE for Certificate IV in Education Support at North Metropolitan TAFE.
Hugh Atkinson, 18, graduated in 2017 from Kent St Senior High School of East Fremantle and received a place at Murdoch University to study Exercise Physiology. He has deferred his studies and scholarship for one year, after being invited to play county cricket in Oxfordshire in UK in 2018.
